Poem #3

The sun

Is like a copper heartbeat

In a cave

Above the sea

Every day

Scratching its lightning fingertips

Against the water

Until it becomes

Clear

And shining

Here, there is a wind

That goes on forever

Above an ocean

Of grass

Here, the gulls circle

Pale shadows

Amid the sky’s cobalt reflection

Like the souls

Of wanderers

And sailors

Lost at sea

Here, footsteps sink

Into wet sand

And we are the first

And the last

To meet this place

Before it tumbles away

Beneath the tide

And is made new again

Here

Among the foxtails

The breezes sing

Gentle and wild

And they are sirens

Drowning us

And we hang suspended

Amidst the icy spray

Like a jewel curled beneath

The sea foam

And the waves

And through our lips

Comes a butterfly of a soul

With paper wings

Unsteady

And free
