回家 Homecoming

陌生人/故乡人,

There comes a time when home becomes a distant place

I am a stranger on a strange land

nowhere to go

nowhere to belong

only left with an echoing of my childhood memories

damp with overexposed photos that the memories can’t mend

too remotely unfamiliar to blend

乡愁/相似,

Nostalgia is the ache to return

streets narrower than what I remembered

buildings grown smaller with time

streetlights glisten through dense halos

street music on perpetual replay

疏远/熟悉,

People here seem so alien

that all I want is a locked door

hiding away

the strange faces

distant talks

smiles in pretence

恐惧/异居,

Then there is fear

fear of not knowing where I belong

fear of coming home to a place I don’t recognize any more

fear of the people who are so distant from who I am

but so familiar to who I was

fear of nostalgia

Nostophobia

being nostalgic for something I’m not so sure had happened

往事/温暖,

There are glimmers from the past that bring back the warmth

I find a stone which I squirreled away so precisely in my childhood

because it looks like the city on the map

it remains forever a tiny, artificial speck on the map of the world

that was my center of gravity

from which radiates every road I’ve stepped

to which I long to return when I am away

游者/作者,

I look for homeland abroad

to bridge things from here to there

to write the present so as to not write off the past

时间/空间,

I am on borrowed time -

Is there an unknown city outside the boundary of this place?

maybe it’s the real city

a city that always beckons

a city that we invent in dreams

and fear we’ve begun to forget

I am no less a figment of time

than this city is a figment of space -

沉睡吧

when the city sleeps,

will it dream of me?
